PDF download of the episode

Scene 1

[The camera travels through the countryside, it passes by nearly empty motorways, we see a few cars drive into the city, we pass the London eye and Big Ben before the camera zooms in on one of the smaller streets. Adults are walking around with white masks on, which cover their noses and mouth’s. Most of the shop windows and doors are boarded up, a few shops are still open, and the camera pans to the hospital, the busiest place in the city and focuses on a single boy watching TV in the hospital waiting room. ]

News Reporter: More cases of the aging virus have been reported throughout London killing anyone over the age of eighteen, police advice people to stay at home and only go out if necessary, we are also advised to stay in after dark due to street fighting. An increase of police and armed forces will be patrolling the streets to stop any violence and looting. Please remember to wear your face masks at all times…

[The screen goes blank as the boy turns off the TV. Sighing he puts his head in his hands then heads towards one of the nearby rooms, a younger boy asleep in a chair can be seen and a pale aged woman lying on the bed as he sits next to her, silent tears run down his face before the screen goes blank]

Scene 2

[Camera pans round to show a school hall full of students, people are shuffling uneasy in their chairs, and there is a distinct lack of teachers at the front of the room. The view then changes to two teenagers sitting next to each other, a blonde haired girl and boy; the boy squeezes the girl’s hand as the voice of the face-masked head master echoes through the hall]

Head Master (speaks through mask): Now as most of you are aware, there is a pandemic spreading through the country. So far, it has not yet reached critical status London, although there have been cases of looting, fighting and people running away, which I am sure you will have seen on the news. It has been decided by the government, that children will not be allowed to travel. At the moment, you will go between school and home, no other form of interaction if allowed.

[A large uproar can be heard from the students, and several people stand up in protest]

Head Master: Sit down! You may not realise how serious this is. People are dying and you could well die. So heed my words, do not break the rules or there will be dire consequences, for some of you that may well be your life. Now as I was saying, in addition to the curfew that is now in place, you may well increased police and army presence in the city. Again, I remind you these are here for your own protection do not fight them or give them any trouble. They may well reprimand you in any way they see fit…

[The blond guy squeezes the girl’s hand tighter and smiles weakly at her]

Head Master: One final thing before you go, if pupils aren’t at school. That may be because they have sick relatives, and have been given precedence. I wish you all the luck in the world while this thing continues, and hope that we all make it through… Dismissed!

[The camera zooms to the feet of the students, as sounds of scuffing feet can be heard, and the camera pans around to show the few adults in the room standing against the walls, careful to avoid any contact. The camera shows the last student leave and then focuses on the two remaining blond haired people]

Girl (speaks shakily): We’ll be okay… won’t we?
Boy (nods): Of course, we will…

[The boy hugs the girl, the doubtful look in his eyes the last thing that’s seen before the camera goes to black]

Scene 3

Sebastian: (Undoes the top button of his shirt) So that’s it then?
Trevor: (Sadly) I guess so
Sebastian: (looks at his brother) Do you think we will be coming back here?
Tara: Maybe…one day
Sebastian: Where we going now?
Tara: Home…
Sebastian: How long will that be for?
Tara (shrugs): I don’t know Seb I just don’t…
Trevor: We’re screwed… whatever way you look at it…

[Trevor and Tara turn away and stars to walk away but Trevor stops when he realises Sebastian is not at his side, turning back around he waits for his twin brother to catch up, before they all start walking away together, the camera zooms in on the graves before fading out]

Malcolm: Josie?

[Josie is one of the blonde kids from earlier in the episode; she is walking home hand in hand with her boyfriend]

Josie: Mal… how are things?
Malcolm: Bad… what’s up?
Josie: Aunt Jen and Uncle Dawson are dead Mal…
Malcolm (sighs): Stuart?
Josie: He’s enroute to come stay with us…. It’s bad Mal… really bad…
Malcolm (nods): Yeah I know… I have to go, my mum…
Josie (nods): I know… take care… love you…
Malcolm; Love you too…

[Malcolm closes the phone as he walks out of the hospital and tries to breathe in some air, feeling as though he can’t breathe. The sight of the facemasks on makes him feel sick as he retches where he stands and breaks down in sobs before the camera fades to black.]

The key turning in the lock is slow motion as Lesley pushes open the door and stands there for a long time wondering whether she should even go in.]

Lesley (quietly): Mum? Dad?

[Slowly Lesley walks into the house, creeping up the stairs as she worries what she will find, but knowing it at the bottom of her heart already. Pushing open the door to her parent’s house, a silent tear falls down her face as she sees what she already knows. Her parents dead in their beds. Lesley does not move, more tears run down her face as the key that was in her hand clatters to the floor and echoes gravely before the camera fades to the next scene.]

Nathaniel (reaches up to gently touch Josie’s face): I love you… and I’ll never let you go, whatever happens… I’ll be there for you… you know that don’t you?
Josie (nods): Yeah… I know… it's just scary what’s happening out there. I mean you see things like this on TV and no one thinks it will ever happen….
Nathaniel (sighs): Yeah but it is happening…
Josie: I know…

[Nathaniel wraps his arms around Josie’s waist as he pulls her closer to him, and the two of them rest their foreheads against each others… looking deep into each other’s eyes]

Nathaniel: I love you Josie… and I will follow you to the end of the earth…
Josie: And I vow the same to you…
Nathaniel (whispers): I’d die for you…

[Nathaniel pulls Josie close for a kiss as the camera zooms close to the pained expression on the couple’s faces. Just as the kiss depends, the sound of a car off screen is heard as a taxi stops next to the curb and Josie jumps up.]

Girl 1: (Lights up another fag and leans back on the bench) So where are we going from here?
Darlene: No idea, but it better be a good place…cause when all the adults are dead the city is going to need a leader and who else is better then me?

[No one replies in fear of their lives]

Darlene: (nods) That’s right no one.

[An old looking woman walks past them coughing; Darlene gets up and walks over to her]

Isabel: (Places a finger on her son’s lips) Shhh…everything is going to be ok…you have to be strong for your brother…and me
Timothy: (wipes his eyes with his free hand) It’s not fair
Isabel: Life isn’t fair babe, things happen for a reason and we need to cope the best we can…
Timothy: (Softly) Mum?

[Isabel lets out a small sigh before closing her eyes]

Timothy: (Crying) Mum?
Isabel: (Opens her eyes a little) I love you and Malcolm, always remember that…we both did.

Trevor: Do I have to?
Sebastian (zips up his bag): Well I’m going… you can stay if you want…

Malcolm (looks at his younger brother): You know what Tim, I don’t know…
Timothy: Do you think they’re being punished?

Sebastian (frowns): Why are you being such a sissy Trev? Since when are you such a cry baby?
Trevor (stamps his foot): I am not a crybaby… I’m being practical, since you’re being an idiot!

[Sebastian rolls his eyes and carries on walking, by now he is some 500 yards from where Trevor is]

Trevor (sighs and mumbles to himself): Why do you have to be this way Seb? Why can’t you just for once listen to a word I have to say? I only wanted to say that I thought we’d be better off in the countryside and you get all macho and defensive… (Shrugs sadly) I only want you to listen to me…

[Sebastian sighs and turns back to go to Trevor who is now looking very downhearted...]

Sebastian: Look Trev… I’m sorry okay. But please, trust me… London is where we need to be… Please, come with me. I don’t want to go on alone…
